The Joy of Candid Photography

Candid photography can often deliver the most memorable photographs.

When we hire a professional photographer to take pictures of us we often only think of the posed shots as suitable for Christmas cards or framed art for your walls. However sometimes a candid shot can be the most interesting photograph of them all. For example, Often I as a photographer will start taking pictures of the subject before they while they are preparing for the posed shoot. This can often yield some delightful results.

So what exactly is candid photography? You may find your self asking. In brief, A candid photograph is a photograph captured without having the subject(s) standing in a posed appearance looking at the camera. This does not mean that the subjects are unaware of the camera and photographer, just that they are not specifically posed during that shot. For a simple example look at the photo below. Here the kids knew that I was there and that I was taking photos, but they were used to me and it and had long gone about acting themselves to attend to their milks. The resulting photo is delightful.

Candid Shots Offer a Glimpse Into Personality

One thing that can be striking about a candid photograph, is how it can give a peek into a moment in time and the feeling that one was present during the image being taken. This is not always the case with portraiture or posed subjects. Candid photography can often tell a story, share a feeling, or express emotion all from a single photograph. So give it a try. ALl you need is some patience, a camera (or phone), and an subject. As Ansel Adams, famously said, "There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs." so go out have fun and click away.
